"Part 5 Spiritual Warfare: Put on the belt of truth"
Don Nicely Ministries Newsletter for May
Ephesians 6:14 (NKJV)14Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth.
Just as a Roman soldier would wear a large belt around his waist to protect his abdomen and genital area in battle, so must we wear the belt of truth to protect us. The belt of a soldier held a sword, and also was a place to attach the breastplate to so the chest and stomach area would be protected. IN essence the belt was foundational in keeping everything in balance, and in place. And this is exactly what God’s belt of truth does. Truth is what secures you in your spiritual walk. Some people foolishly say it doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you believe. This is a crazy line of thinking that people only apply to their spiritual life, because it doesn’t make enough sense to apply to our natural life.
It is possible to believe something that is dead wrong. For years people believed that the world was flat, doctors would cut people to let them bleed out to get rid of infections. This practice of course would kill many of the patients. Both of these beliefs were later proven to be totally wrong. Although the bible told the truth about both before science proved the bible right. We now think that both beliefs are silly, but for years people believed them to be truth. They were wrong!
The only way to truly know right and wrong is to know the truth. And Jesus told us that He is the truth.
John 14:6 (NKJV)6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
He also told us that his word was the truth.
John 17:17 (NKJV)17Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
It’s so hard to separate Jesus from his word, because He is the word become flesh.
John 1:14 (NKJV)14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Peter exhorts us in 1 Peter 1:13 that we need to gird up our minds for action.
1 Peter 1:13 (NKJV)13Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
The word “grid” is an old English term that means to “fasten.” When they would pull up their robe front and tuck it in their belt they would be getting ready for battle. To gird up your mind means to fasten God’s word to your mind firmly so that truth is secure in your life. We need truth to defeat all the enemy propaganda that is sent our way. Truth directly opposes lies and since Satan is the father of all lies we can be sure that many are coming our way.
John 8:44 (NKJV) 44You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
The apostle Paul warned us that we would be bombarded by all kinds of doubts and false ideas about God.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (NKJV)13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
We must understand that spiritual battles take place in the mind. Satan can’t read your mind, but he tries to sow weeds in it to choke God’s truth from taking root. We must secure God’s word in our mind through study, commitment, revelation and carefully applying what we have learned. We deceive ourselves when we hear only and don’t do what we know is the truth. God doesn’t want us to just understand the truth, but to “know” the truth so we can be free in our walk with him.
John 8:32 (NKJV)32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”
The only truth that sets us free is the truths that we apply to our daily life.
Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)14But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Finally in Review; the belt of truth accomplishes primarily two things.
It forms a protective barrier in our lives against the devils lies, schemes, and deception.
It gives the other important pieces of our armor a place to attach to. This in turn balances us out and makes us more stable in our walk with God.
